Inspired Karters Racing is a team of over 40 undergraduate students from BITS, Pilani who conceptualize, design, manufacture, test and race
· Single Seater, Off Road buggies
· Single Seater, Open wheeled Formula type race cars.
The students come from a variety of backgrounds and from all years and fields of engineering. They work in their specialized areas of interest. The team is structured to ensure that each member’s strengths are utilized to the fullest. The team members are adept at balancing college academics and the project. They spend most of their days at the workshop; discussing, designing, researching and planning for the days to come. Regular Team Meetings ensure efficient coordination between sub system teams.
The club currently consists of two teams which participate in two national level competitions.
a) SAEINDIA BAJA: This contest challenges participating teams to design and fabricate their own off-road vehicle. The vehicles are judged on their ability to traverse a harsh off-road racing course while not succumbing to the rigors of it.
b) SAEINDIA SUPRA: This competition challenges college level teams to conceive, design, fabricate their own open-wheeled, formula style, racing cars which have to be durable enough for circuit racing.
The Journey of Inspired Karters Racing unfolded with participation in the inaugural SAEINDIA BAJA- 2007. It has had fair share of false starts and roadblocks. But the team has consistently improved over the years. In BAJA 2010, the team finished 10th out of a total of 85 teams. In 2011, the car was adjudged the best design and was unveiled by Karun Chandhok at the inauguration ceremony.
The car finished 10th in the endurance race out of a starting grid of 85 cars.
The team also finished 10th overall out of a total of 200 registered teams.
· BAJA 2011
The car was selected out 76 teams to be unveiled during the inauguration ceremony after a design evaluation by judges at the competition site.
The car finished third in the acceleration event which ensured a podium position at the Starting Grid.
The team was Runners Up in the Engineering Analysis category winning an amount of Rs 50,000/-

Inspired Karters Racing in the Press
The team has received excellent coverage in the national media. The team has featured in articles like Hindustan Times, Times of India, Education Times, The Hindu, Overdrive Magazine, Dainik Bhaskar, People Samachar and Patrika. The Team has also featured in Event coverage by TV channels like CNBC – TV 18, Ten Sports and News X.
The team is planning to represent BITS, Pilani on an international level by participating in the Formula SAE International event(FSAE). There are 7 different FSAE competitions held worldwide, and the team is in the process of finalizing which one it will be participating in. Irrespective of where the team goes, the costs incurred are huge. The logistics cost of transporting the car to a location abroad will be very high. Production cost will also be higher because of the use of a more powerful engine and associated drivetrain.
The FSAE car shall feature several design modifications due to different competition regulations. Some of the changes are detailed below:
SUPRA SAE (Fomula SAE) India (2011)
International Formula SAE Event (2012)
800cc (45bhp) Maruti Suzuki 800 Engine
600cc, 106 bhp Honda CBR
Increase in the power to weight ratio
Stock M800 Transmission
Chain Drive, Torsen limited-slip Differential
Improved Traction/power transmission
ST 52 Tubing Spaceframe
4130 Chromoly Tubing Spaceframe
JK Tires 145/70/R12
Hoosier 20 x 7.0- R13 Racing Slicks
Lighter is faster
Streamlined bodywork, Front and Rear Wings
Increased downforce, better cornering
Motec Data Acquisition System
Improved testing and tuning of the car
Why You Should Contribute
Money is always a critical resource and constraint for a project of this magnitude. The idea of participating in such a prestigious event and the gains it provides to the student community are strong reasons for our alumni to support us.
Below are a few points highlighting how BITSAA will gain from this association:
1. It will contribute to the promotion of technical R&D at college level, giving students a great opportunity to learn and excel in the field of automobiles.
2. This association will further strengthen the position of BITS as a leader in providing top engineering education and promoting innovation.
3. BAJA and SUPRA are the culmination of the brightest minds in the country with leading automobile giants such as JK Tyre, Maruti Suzuki, BOSCH, ARAI, ICAT, Bharat Petroleum, AUTOLIV, Lombardini, ZF India etc.
4. Participation in the international Formula SAE event will help build the brand BITS, Pilani globally.
5. The events attract wide media coverage. Newspapers, news channels, radio and leading auto-magazines cover the events extensively. For instance a complete coverage of each team and their interviews are printed in the OVERDRIVE. Various other newspapers and magazines also run articles on the participating college.
