BITS.aid ~ Young Stars

Young Stars was the first event of BITS.aid in Bangalore, and it was kicked off with due fervor on Sunday, the 11th of December at Cubbon Park. This event was aimed at bringing together children from underprivileged backgrounds and providing them with a platform to showcase their talent. It encompassed five schools - Ananya, Makala Jagriti, Sukrupa and two government schools - working for under-privileged children between the age groups of six and nine and the total participative strength for the competitions stood close to 160.

The day was lined with activity for the brimming-with-enthusiasm children, and following the brief formality of registration, the singing and painting competitions commenced simultaneously. While some surprising talent came to the fore in the music department, the painting competition was marked by the distinct expression of hope in a child’s imagination. The collage-making and writing competitions were also held prior to lunch and suffice it to say that the hardest task for the day was indeed the judges’.

Lunch proved to be the easiest-to-manage task for the volunteers as the children exuded remarkable restraint and discipline through the meal. One could see that they had been rendered famished owing to the rather active day, but they waited patiently and noiselessly as they were served individually – and it was most heartening to see that they did not start with their meal until each of their peers had been served.

Following lunch were the high-energy events of Drama and Dance, and the adrenaline was all-pervasive. Keen effort had gone into rehearsal and dress-selection, and it was all too visible in the rendition of the age-appropriate plays. The dances were enthralling with their fine choreography and beautiful co-ordination, and coupled with the varied hues of costume, it was pure visual delight.

Amidst loud cheering and thunderous applause, the prize distribution ceremony took place at the end, and just the look of elation on the winners’ faces was more rewarding than anything the organizers could ask for. The day concluded at about 4.00 P.M. and the children were escorted safely home by transportation arranged for the event.

All while providing the children with an opportunity for realization of their talent, this was a wonderful opportunity for sensitizing the volunteers towards the need of the community and how gratifying and overwhelming an experience like this can be. One can safely say that all of this and more was achieved through this well-managed and successful affair, and due credit goes to the Rotary Club of Koramangala and BITSAA members for their magnanimous contributions in cash and kind.
