“Hitting the rewind” with Waves 2013

Posted By Parth Goel, Wednesday, February 12, 2014

A festival that celebrates life, verve and unbounded talent, one of the fastest growing college cultural festivals of our country, and also among the most popular, Waves has become a cultural and social phenomenon among the youth and has come a long way since its humble inception in 2006.

Waves 2013 took place from 8th to 10th November with over 100 colleges and 30,000 participants. This three-day long festival saw 52 competitions spread over different genres of music, fine arts, literature,  dramatics and dance apart from a lot of unorthodox informal events spread over the 72 hours

The theme for Waves 2013 was "Hit the Rewind” with Waves going back in time to relive the best of all the decades. The crowd witnessed performances by Bollywood music maestros Vishal and Shekhar, as well as performances by ‘Blackstratblues’, the band fronted by prodigal guitarist Warren Mendonsa and vocalist Nikhil D’Souza. In addition to these performances, there was also an electronic dance music night by DJ NYK, among India’s best DJ’s. For the very first time Waves hosted a round of Femina Miss India, judged by the former Miss India Rochelle Maria Rao, the finalists of which got a direct entry to the regionals in their respective cities. Crew from the East India Comedy regaled the crowds with laughter by their stand-up comedy acts. Adding spice to the festival, there were special guest appearances by Bollywood actresses Priyanka Chopra and Kalki Koechlin during the special nights.

Waves 2013 launched its own social campaign: ‘I.A.M.- Innovate, Act, Motivate’ addressing the issue of women abuse and harassment in India, a petition to make self-defence classes a part of school curriculum was signed by over a thousand people and sent to the Prime Minister of India, a free self-defence workshop was also held during the festival.

There is something in store for everyone and Waves makes sure that the three days spent are remembered for nothing less than absolute entertainment. Waves is a melting pot of various cultures and diversities, a festival that celebrates the various arts and cultures. Waves over the years has grown at amazing pace and continues to amaze with every new edition, it’s a cult beyond a cultural fest.
