In an earlier BITSAA Newsletter from February 25, 2012, we had brought to you the news about our signature project BITSConnect 2.0 – which creates a model for multi-campus education in India. We announced that as part of BITSConnect 2.0, telepresence and high-end video conferencing technologies would be deployed across our four campuses in Pilani, Dubai, Goa and Hyderabad. In the last two weeks, a lot of significant developments have occurred and we are excited to share our updates with you all.
As a first step among the range of capabilities that BITSConnect 2.0 is bringing to students, faculty and alumni, the entire faculty across four campuses were given access last week to their own personal Cisco Webex Web-Conferencing solution license. Some of you may be aware of what Webex can bring to the table in terms of enabling people to collaborate with one another from multiple locations. Web conferencing is a great way to allow content sharing and real-time interaction using integrated audio and video capabilities. Let us look at some BITS related scenarios when Webex can prove to be very beneficial.
For example, Chemistry faculty in the Hyderabad Campus can host a meeting to discuss curriculum for a potential new course offering for the next semester with their counterparts in Dubai. Another example is a group of project students in the Robotics lab in Goa working together with the Robotics lab in Pilani on a project.
An even better scenario is when an Embryo talk in one campus can be relayed in real-time across all other campuses. One alumnus can address up to a thousand students per lecture theatre classrooms at once. Geographic location ceases to be a barrier in learning!
The best example however is that owing a personal Webex license now empowers faculty to work in partnership with researchers from not just across campuses, but from around the globe, across universities. As part of this project, a few Webex licenses have also been awarded to the alumni to assist them in coordinating global activities.
Now, on to some exciting fund-raising news! While we will cover fund-raising in greater detail in the forthcoming newsletter, we want to still let you know that the fundraising effort was in large part kicked off by the $100k in funds that came from Bits Global Meet 2011. The $100k check was presented to BITS Pilani recently. BITSAA wants to thank each and every one for their generous contributions.
Also, BITSAA chapters have set individual fundraising targets for BITSConnect 2.0.To add to all this excitement, individual batches are engaged in healthy competition to be the top fundraising batch. If you are interested in showing support for BITSConnect 2.0, firstname.lastname@example.org would love to hear from you.
Stay tuned in for more news and anecdotes from our fundraising campaigns from across the globe in our next newsletter!
See you soon,
The BITSConnect2.0 Team
