Advancing the leading edge of Moore's Law - Dealing with challenges & opportunities

"No exponential lasts forever, but forever can be delayed" - Gordon Moore of the Moore's Law fame. 


This is something followed in letter and spirit at Intel. Thanks to the revolution spearheaded by Intel, which delivers new, smaller dimension manufacturing technologies every two years, the exponential in Moore's Law has enjoyed a continued validity for over four decades now. It comes as quite a surprise to Moore himself, that his Law has consistently held true over the years, right from 1965!  The implications are far reaching, even if little perceived. Everything and anything from the internet boom to the latest cloud computing is connected inextricably to the Moore's Law, which is one of the little known drivers of the global economic value engine.

As such, who better can we have to talk of exploiting opportunities in pushing the leading frontier of Moore's Law, than a VP of Technology and Manufacturing Group at Intel Sunit Rikhi, a BITSian of the '79 batch.  He leads silicon technology definition and provides custom foundry capabilities  to  support Intel's product lines in customizing Intel® Atomâ„¢ processor-based SOCs and growth into new markets including consumer electronics and embedded computing. 


Sunit  will provide us an insight into the spirit of technologists at Intel, where engineers spend little time wondering about when the end will come and instead dedicate themselves to delaying the end of exponential, thereby sustaining the Moore's law. His talk will summarize the economic drivers, challenges and opportunities at the leading edge of the Moore's Law scaling in the context of microprocessor and system-on-chip VLSI design.
