A look back at WAVES Winter 2009 |

It was like a movement. It was like we lost ourselves and became part of something bigger.” -Anonymous Brazilian fan about the Rock in Rio festival
Every festival is like a movement, where the unity of hundreds of BITSians only can create something beautiful. They say, being a part of the herd makes you ordinary, but in this case, every bit of ordinary strings together to make the extraordinary.
WAVES Winter 2009, was held from the 6th-8th of November, and would not have been possible without the dedication of hundreds of BITSians. With the tagline "Winter was never this hot!" (quite literally so, as well), WAVES had all the elements of the BITSian fest, the varied events, the workshops, the exciting specials, the stars, and the beautiful craziness that envelops the campus for three days, transforming it into a live, pulsating city.
This post is meant to be a lookback of WAVES Winter 2009, a sneak peek into the fest. WAVES was inaugrated on the 5th of November 2009. "BITSians create waves wherever they go.” Never has louder applause been heard in enormous auditorium of BITS-Pilani, Goa Campus. Anu Hasan, the Chief Guest, a talk show host, famed Television personality and ex-BITSian actually made the audience sit up and listen to her short, yet rousing speech. The Inaugral Ceremony of WAVES Winter 2009 started on an auspicious note as the world-renowned sand artist Sudarshan Patnaik, unveiled his latest sand masterpiece, a sculpture on the horrors of Global Warming at WAVES.
This was followed by an exciting bevy of performances in the Auditorium. The Dance Club of the campus, which never stops experimenting with interesting themes, gave us a lovely classical performance, some bold hip-hop moves, and a paean to unrequited love in the form of a dance-drama. The iconic Mime Club showcased it’s version of the "Idiot Box” which left all in peals of laughter. Sometimes, you do not need words to make the world understand double entendres. Kala, the Fine Arts Club created Jimi Hendrix live on stage in a span of 5 minutes, as "Voodoo Child” played. But then, a quiet fell in the Audi, as darkness reigned and suddenly we saw a flicker of light. What followed was something that cannot be described. The laser show held us all spellbound, and depicted all that was to happen at WAVES. They say your life, flashes by your eyes, well, this time WAVES flashed by our eyes.
The first day saw the presence of celebrities like Kishore Namit Kapoor, reknowned acting guru, who came to deliver a talk about the nuances of theatre and acting, Ms. Vidya Balan, beloved Bollywood actress, and internationally reknowned fashion choreographer, Kaushik Ghosh who had come to judge to Fashion Parade. Ms. Balan was here as a part of Nanhi Kali, a charitable organization, that promotes the education of the girl child. Ms.Balan exhorted all BITSians to give up that extra glass of coke, and save money, because saving even Rs.6 every day, for a year, can fund the education of a child. Later, DJ Suketu livened up the night with his awesome Bollywood remixes.
The second day had members of Thespo, the National Youth Theatre festival come down to judge the Stage Play event in the Drama Category. The Best Actor and Actress of the Drama Category also won a chance to train at the Kishore Namit Kapoor Acting Academy in the summer. There were many amazing special performances as well, including Slain, who have opened for Iron Maiden, The Fictitious Group, winners of Boogie Woogie and the famous Bollywood singer, KK who enthralled everyone with his mellifluous voice, performing 25 songs! This was undoubtedly one of the best performances we have ever had!
The last day, the 8th of November, also saw a bunch of exciting competitions, such as Mr. And Miss WAVES. WAVES also went international, with the participation of our foreign student (from Queen’s University, Canada) in the event. Following that was the Rock Night, with a performance by the evergreen poster boys of Indian Rock, Parikrama, who performed their original hits, along with covers of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and AC/DC.
WAVES is over and gone, but to tell the truth, it's always wonderful to be involved in the start of something beautiful. We've raised the bar now, and we hope the future batches live up to it. And we hope that when you read this, you'll reminisce about WAVES' and OASIS' past, and will bring back memories of those lovely times.

BOSM 09 Day 5 |

Wake me up when September ends. Humming this Greenday score, on this starry night of nights, in a mass exodus from the now barren Gym-G, I stroll into quieter pastures- the huge pile of haversacks reminding me of how BOSM’s come to end now. And some fest it’s been. This year saw the fest come to age. With close to 40 colleges participating, around 1000 outstis on campus, BOSM’09 delivered all it promised, and more. From increased sponsorship and prize money, to tougher competition. From six pack ‘munde’, which most girls find eye-candy, to cute ‘kudis’, who we definitely find eye candy. BOSM’s no more just about BITS, it has transcended to a stratum where mercurial talent from colleges across the country wish to showcase their skill in, all in a highly competitive environment. Sitting through the rigors of the usual post fest ValD, my head was still whizzing from the exhibition in perfection we saw from the boys’ basketball final tonight. An exhibition in excellence, an exhibition of super- talented players doing what they’ve always known to do best- play ball. As the boys from KMC left the courts like gladiators from an epic battle, through a haze of dust in Gym-G, led by the tournament’s MVP- ‘Sachin the Spartan’, it looked a fitting end to the four day gala. The BITSian team was good- better oiled and coordinated than most teams we’ve had before. But in KMC they met rivals far beyond good. The breakneck pace at which they moved the ball, the deadly accuracy in their shots, the display of breathtaking athleticism- all made for a lesson in basketball. We can take heart from a well deserved silver, knowing that we’ve been beaten by a better team. There were similar stories in most other events, with BITS bagging silver in boys’ volleyball, football, and badminton, bronze in cricket, and a few golds in athletics, swimming and chess. The only sport we bagged a double gold- boys and girls-in was TT. I’ve reached C’not now. It’s definitely quieter pastures tonight- the chirpy outsti girls and the loud outsti guys missing. Seems like forever that they were here. Sharmaji quips ”Aaj BITS BITS jaisa lag raha hai.” He’s right. As I take a seat, I overhear an animated group cribbing about an ES (Electrical Sciences) project they’ve to submit the day after. I smile, and vanish into the darkness of this starry night. BOSM 09 Day 4 |

Ever heard of Catenacio? In footballing lexicon, it’s an intense defensive formation meant to scruff the wind out of the opposition’s forward line. Legendary Italian defenders of yesteryears were the chief proponents of it, and it’s still visible in many coaching manuals today, albeit modified, famously of a certain Jose Mourinho. It’s been twice today that I’ve come across the term. First, at the BOSM Sports Quiz, where our jolly old quizmasters showed us a picture of the formation asking us to identify it, and then at the football grounds where the PEC defenders played their part in imitating the Nesta-Maldini duo. The quiz was fun- good participation, good questions, and off-course our good old quizmasters. Wish I could say the same for the match, but I just can’t; and it’s got nothing to do with the result. BITS won 3-1, and progressed to the semis. As a football fanatic, I’ve grown up watching videos of Cruyff’s total football, followed Madrid’s Galacticos, and admired Barca’s ‘el triplete’. To me football has been about blinding moves, beautiful passes and breathtaking goals. Perhaps it’s flawed thinking. Perhaps results are all that matter. Either ways, defensively aggressive and overtly physical sides make for boring spectatorship. And that’s what the BITS-PEC match was. With PEC throwing all their muscle at BITS, the match was mostly about midfield scuffles, pushes and pulls. The only flashes of brilliance produced goals for the home team, which although exhausted, will take heart from the fact that they can match up with the more physical sides as well. Till now, in all my posts, I’ve talked of sports like basketball, volleyball, and now football- probably the more followed sports globally. It’s not deliberate; just that I probably found they made for more scintillating viewing. Not surprisingly, I was debating with a friend as to how I hadn’t attended TT matches cause they didn’t excite me enough. Having been ordered to sit through one, my previously rigid views were shattered, as I saw myself hooting and cheering; appreciating delicate ‘chops’, and jumping at rallies which went our way. Owe her a treat now. As the night quietly slips into obscurity, as the end of the fest draws nearer, we’re here in FD II QT, lazing around the grass patches, listening to the Music Club perform in the ‘Western Music Nite’. There’s quite a few of us here- BITSians and non BITSians, singing in little groups, the camaderie for everyone to see. This night captures all that the fest stands for in a few musical words. BOSM 09 Day 3 |

Who was it that said 'The only thing I understand is that I understand
is that I don't understand anything' ? George Bush? Pintu Sir? I can't remember,
and Google's not helping. But someone said it, and it could easily have been
exasperated response from a pundit being asked to analyze the girls' basketball
scene this BOSM. One day you're good, the next day you're not, and every team
you see on their best day seems to make you think that they'll walk away with
the title. A night before it was BITS, and tonight it's JMC, perhaps, it's best
to call it a tale of two nights.
Fresh from its 34-17
drubbing of MITS, you'd have expected that little bounce-in-the-steps from the
girls team, as they squared up against albeit tougher (and taller) opponents in
JMC. But then it was down to playing ball, there was only one team that showed
up. For their very first tap, things worked like clockwork.
Push-pass-move-pass-score. The BITS team looked on in despair as a bevy of
JMCites flew across the court, converting every move, forcing errors and then
some more of the same. The game finished at a 38-15 to JMC, leaving our team
with lot to think about.
Meanwhile, down at the volleyball
court, it was a tale of two bulls from the same city. As BITS met BKBIET, you
couldn't help but be amused for the BITSians sitting in the stands, trying to
match up with the 'BK..O-BK...Go BK' roars from our cross wall neighbors.
Feeling ever so embarrassed, taking cautious look outs for acquaintances, our
average BITSian started slow on the cheering, but it wasn't long before he
caught up, and caught up he did. Just as we thought that the game was slipping
away, deafening chants of 'Boooo' filled the stands and beyond, every time a BK
player touched the ball oddly reminiscent of the 'Hoo..Hoo' of the old day's
coliseum. It rallied the home team into winning the 2nd set, before wrapping it
up in the 3rd. 2-1 to BITS, and this one goes out to the crowds.
As I straddle into Dr. Dosa, the head will whizzing from the game, I
smile at a friend, and he smiles back, both acknowledging the different selves
we've seen of each other tonight, from the usual introverts to the gut-wrenched
Romans of yesteryears.

Toggling through commercials on DC, as a wingie selects his ‘Ad-of-the-day’ for a PAVA (Print and Visual Advertising) section, we suddenly discover the Nike-shoes-toting naked man who runs through the length of the football pitch, making a mockery of the security. Reminds me of scenes a few hours back, only that time it was a (thankfully) fully clothed loki running rabid in Gym-G, chased down by chowki bhaiyyas.
It was one of those nights where just about everything seemed to be happening. From the almost animalistic celebrations following BITS’ first win in a hockey match in four years (they scored their first goal in two years), to the composed grace of acknowledging a drubbing handed out to the rival team on the football grounds, to jubilant crowds on the basketball courts, it was a night where you never seemed short of action.
With ears still buzzing from the “askalakadi gala gala gala! Hoo! Haa!”, and the odd “Oye Lathi-Lathi oye” (for Lathi, a towering presence on the court), tonight’s basketball matches, always the show stoppers, were a spectacle to behold, more so for the festivity around the courts, what with buckets and non-stop cheering for the home team. It’s one of those things players dream of- loud “oooohhhhh”s on missing a point, and violent claps on scoring one. They say it gets the best out of you. And that it did, for both the girls’ and the boys’ teams wore their best jumpers to the court, and put on an exhibition performance. With expectations already rising, it’ll be interesting to see how they fare against some of the tougher nuts around.
Outstis finally seemed to have discovered Cnot. It’s as full as I’ve ever seen it at 11:30 pm. As I stroll in, I’m met by ‘Gerrard’ and ‘Lampard’ playing ball in the middle of the street. I manage a little pass myself, and smile past, imagining myself in a jam packed Wembley.
Some results on Day 2, BOSM are as follows:-
Cricket:
BITS Pilani bt Vasavi College of Engg. by 8 wickets
Football:
BITS-PILANI vs SINGHANIA UNI. BITS-PILANI 7-0
Basketball(boys):
BITS PILANI 45-19 JIET
Basketball(girls):
BITS Pilani 34- 17 MITS
Hockey:
BITS Pliani 1-0 IT BHU

BOSM 09 Day 1 |
Posted By Vijay Sharma,

Ever so often, there comes a day, when you’re given a dose of harsh reality. Bittersweet feelings throng a bemused mind trying to make sense of what’s happening. Picture this- 7:30 p.m., Cnot, a group of 2ndyears in front of Sharmaji’s describing their picks of the outsti ‘kudis’. An offhand comment on a certain ‘kudi’ spurs a loud monologue of disagreement. To illustrate his state of mind more graphically, a friend describes her facial texture as a ‘sinusoidal wave of decreasing amplitude’. Ouch. The realization that on any other given day the explicit comparison would have spurred on a riot of snobbish laughter, and that this was not one of those days, primarily because we’d all been in the perpetual ‘on-fest-cultural-shock’ modes, hits me. We’re geeks in Geekdome. No matter how hard we try, we’ll still be geeks.
And geeks like it elaborate. From the CCTV presentation, to Ragamalika’s performance, to speeches by the Sports Secretary, Professor Raghurama, Professor R.K. Mittal, and then some, it was all very elaborate at Inaug- BOSM ‘09. The chief guest, Surbhi Misra, all of under 19(she won the bronze in the 2009 World Squash Junior Open, and is currently under 19 champion), appealed to our better selves for sportsmanship and ‘spirit of the game’. While constantly referring to the fest as B.O.S.M, she seemed rather bemused herself, clearly not used to such settings. For what was the first of its kind for BOSM, regional assocs (PCA, Capitol and Andhra Samithi) performed to regional beats, and off course there was the Dance Club to lend a twist or two. Culminating the event was an exhibition basketball match between the hosts and Malla Reddy, which we won without much sweat.
Outside the Domino’s stall, waiting for it to kick in, I’m mulling over how there’s a shift in the nature of loud conversations in a day’s time. From discussions of Av(g)s or CS or Kafka, to a loud(just as No. 13 scores a basket) 'goal ho gaya oye', the change is sudden and drastic. Makes me wonder if we’d fit into the world out there after the cultural complexity we’ve become so comfortable with in this conundrum called Pilani.

BOSM 09(16-20th Sept) Day 0
With European giants gracing the pitch on this starry Champions League night, out here for the eternal sports enthusiast, it’s time for “Operación Retorno”, a big wakey-wakey after a long siesta. BOSM’09 promises everything from previous editions, only bigger and better-boasting of not just the shimmies and the feigns, but also four days of festive chaos. As I stare at the usually dark Gym-G backdrop, now floodlit, suddenly alive, thronged by outsti girls scurrying around for pies, Nutan flooded by ‘Dilli’, I know that the fest is well and truly here.
The usual clamor over cabbage pitches aside; teams have managed good practices, and there’s an air of nervous expectancy. This year’s seen a record sponsorship for the fest- reportedly in double digits. There are print and media partners, namely HT and JAM. There are cultural assocs performing at the Inaug, with a Western Music Night and a BITS-Marathon also in store later on. All this when ‘flying pigs’- as a certain Nostradamus’ famously predicted, threatened the fest’s very occurrence.
For the not-so-sporty amongst us, there’s always Domino’s and CCD on the fringes, not to mention rapper-outfit clad jocks with Mohawks and cute ‘kudis’ with cuter accents. As for BOSM itself, we might not have roofs and balconies over-spilled with rapturous fans, but somewhere, through this unglamorous title in unglamorous settings, the magic of sport maintains faith in the solidarity of community.
Gautam
Raghav Memani(Gen Sec,Students Union) & Udit Sethia (BOSM English Press Coordinator) have helped this initiative by proposing their support and requesting alumni to participate on the EPC Blog for BOSM as well . www.bits-bosm.org/epc
