Dr. Jai Gaur  - the proud BITSian

Jai P. Gaur graduated with B. E. (Hons) in Telecommunication Engineering from Birla Engineering College in Pilani in 1962 and received M. E. from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and has a Ph. D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota.

Upon graduation he worked in Engineering and Managerial positions at NCR, UNIVAC (Burroughs Corp), Texas Instrument and Digitech. During this period, he continued studies in Business Curriculum and received MBA. degree. Subsequently he quit the corporate world and founded Communication Technology Inc. in 1987.His Company provides major products and consulting services to diagnose Computer Network Performance problems.

Mr. Shanker Lal Gaur - an inspiration

Shanker Lal Gaur, son of a postman (mail carrier), was born in 1914 in the small village of Kolaras (in MP), about 85 miles from Gwalior. After completing the eighth grade , he asked for donations from village residents in order to help in his goal of pursuing higher education at a school in Gwalior. Subsequently he went to Gwalior on his own.

The first graduate

While attending school there, he worked as a tutor for a family with six children. His effectiveness as a tutor resulted in the father of the family inviting him to join the family and live with them in their home; and he did.He excelled in school, receiving numerous merit scholarships including Gold Medals in his Intermediate and B.Sc. examinations from the Agra University. He was the top student in his class and the first college graduate in the Gaur family. After graduation, he worked for the M.P. Government in several key Administrative positions and retired as a Chief Marketing Officer.

A believer in education

Mr. Gaur always firmly believed in the value of learning. Through great personal sacrifice and despite having very limited income and resources he managed to fund the educations of his two sons and three daughters in the fields of Engineering, Medicine and Science. In addition, despite the prevailing attitude against education of women in India at that time, he strongly encouraged his daughters to pursue higher education. All three went on to complete post graduate degrees in Medical and Science fields. In addition he continued to encourage and financially support nephews and nieces in educational pursuits. He was a Role model to all the family members.

"Honored to name the room"

The many family members who benefited from his hard work and devotion are honored to name this conference room after him.

The story of Mr. Shanker Lal Gaur, a man who believed education was very important resonates highly with BITSConnect 2.0, and the impact it will make in redefining BITS learns!

Stay tuned as we bring more updates about the project !
