Honoring Saptarishi Gurus BITS-75 Charitable Trust Guru-Dakshina Program
At the upcoming BITSAA Global Meet (BGM)-2014 program at Hyderabad in January 2014, the BITS-75 Charitable Trust (an initiative of the BITS 70-75 alumni) will hold its annual signature program, Guru-Dakshina. Seven professors (Saptarshi Gurus) who taught BITS 70-75 alumni at Pilani will be honored on 3 January 2014 at the BGM.
The Trust had honoured 14 professors (Gurus) in its annual Guru-Dakshina program from 2009 through 2013. The Trust presents to each Guru a citation plaque along with a cheque for Rupees One Lakh as mark of its respectful appreciation and deep gratitude towards each Guru.
Most of you who were at BITS, Pilani during the 1965 to 1990 period, will recognize these seven Gurus immediately. You may avail the rare opportunity of talking to them in person and express your appreciation and gratitude. Tell them how their teachings have shaped your life and destiny to become a responsible member of the society and also how that helped you in your professional accomplishments after you graduated from BITS. That would be your personal and individualized way to offer your own Guru-Dakshina to them. It will mean a lot to them and touch their hearts. If you joined BITS after 1990, you will be surely inspired by this unique event at BGM-2014.
Here are the seven professors (Saptarshi Gurus) who will be honored at BGM-2014.
Prof. R. R. Gulati
Prof. Gulati joined BITS in 1963 and his illustrious career there spanned over 20 years. As a faculty member of the EEE department, he was responsible for setting up various labs and taught measurement techniques and television engineering. He authored several text books among which the book on monochrome and color television is quite popular even today. Prof. Gulati was also a popular warden at the Rana Pratap BhavanAfter retiring from BITS, Prof. Gulati has been active as an author and has published several books related to television.
Prof. Dr. V. V. Mandke
After graduating in Electrical Engineering from IIT Bombay in 1965 followed by post-graduation from IIT Kanpur in 1967 and doctorate from IIT Kanpur in 1970, Prof. Mandke had an illustrious career at BITS Pilani spanning from 1969 to 1989. At BITS he was Professor and Dean of Practice School and Deputy Director when he left BITS.
Besides being a teacher of rare exception, Prof. Mandke's pioneering contribution was in developing innovative off-campus programs involving all disciplines of engineering, science and humanities by implementing the BITS Practice School pioneering program. He developed university-industry linkages to implement the collaborative post-graduate engineering programs which were implemented entirely in industrial settings. These programs made BITS a unique institution of learning at that time.
Prof. Dr. R. P. Jain
Prof. Dr. R. P. Jain completed his graduation in telecommunication engineering in 1962 followed by post-graduation in electronics engineering both from Birla Engineering College. He later completed his doctorate from BITS in 1981. He had an illustrious career from 1963 to 1987at BITS Pilani including as head of Electrical and Electronics engineering department.
After departing from BITS, he founded CR State college of Engineering at Sonepat and worked as Director till 2000. Later he founded another institute, BM Institute of Engineering and Technology, at Sonepat and worked there as its Director.
Prof. Dr. C. S. Rao
After graduating in Chemical Engineering in 1962 from Andhra University, Prof. Rao obtained MS from the University of Nebraska in 1964 followed by doctorate from the University of Houston, Texas in 1970. Prof. Rao had an illustrious career at BITS, Pilani spanning from 1973 to 1986, and later at BITS Hyderabad campus from 1994 to 2002. He was also actively involved with the Practice School program of BITS.
During 1986-94 Dr. Rao was Director of Sardar Patel Renewable Energy Research Institute where he was deeply involved in renewable energy processes and devices. He is credited with 50 research papers, a text book and is a member of numerous expert committees and panels constituted by government.
He is currently Director of School of Biotechnology at Sreenidhi Institute of Science and Technology, Hyderabad.
Prof. Dr. G. P. Avasthi
After completing MA in economics in 1964, he completed his doctorate in Economics from Rajasthan University in 1971. He had an illustrious teaching career at BITS Pilani from 1971 to 2004. Besides being an excellent teacher in economics he was instrumental in designing a unique five year degree course of MSc. Economics with inputs from mathematics, science and engineering. He was instrumental in modernization and computerization of the library at BITS. He was also member of the Faculty Recruitment committee of B.I.T.S. Board of Governors.
Prof. Avasthi is currently leading retired but active life at Pune and Pilani.
Prof. Dr. K. R. Chandoke
After graduating from Maharaja College, Jaipur in Biology 1957 and post-graduation in Botany from Birla College, Prof. Chandhoke joined Birla College in 1960 where he later obtained doctorate. Prof. Chandhoke had an illustrious career at BITS Pilani spanning over 42 years.
In addition to teaching Biology, Botany and appreciation of art and painting, Prof. Chandhoke was the warden of Gandhi Bhavan for a long time. At the BITS campus he was associated with Cine Club, Earn-while-Learn program, and appreciation of art and painting. His contributions at the campus can be seen even today in beautiful mural painting at V-fast and new library. He was deeply involved in several social causes such as Adult Education, NSS program, TB Eradication, Staff housing project, and French language and photography teaching.
Prof. Chandhoke is currently leading retired life at Jaipur authoring books on Environmental Science and Disaster Management.
Prof. Dr. R. B. Saxena
Prof. Saxena completed his BSc and MSc in Electrical Engineering from BHU and doctorate from the Moscow Power Institute, USSR (today’s Russia). He had an illustrious career at BITS Pilani from 1963 to 1976. Prof. Saxena was considered in those days one of finest teachers of electrical machines, power electronics and electrical drives.
Later he continued teaching at IIT Roorkee for 22 years, Moradabad Institute of Technology as Director for 4 years, Graphic Era Institute, Dehradun and is currently teaching at the College of Engineering, Roorkee.
Please come and join this solemn occasion at BGM-2014 in Hyderabad and meet all these Gurus who had taught us and molded our careers and life paths after our graduation.
