New science building at Pilani – Request to all Alumni
Friday, October 31, 2008
The new science building costing
approximately INR 5 crores has been authorized by the BITS Board of
Governors. They felt that most emphasis in the past has been on the
T (for technology) and S (for Science) has not been emphasized
The vision for this building is to construct a world class facility
that will house the following labs in four distinct areas:
1. Drug Design and Discovery Labs: 4 in all
2. Nanoscience & Technology Labs: 3 in all
3. Biotechnology and Proteomics Labs: 3 in all
4. Public health area Labs: 3 in all
Apart from this, there will be
classrooms, office spaces and the foundation so made to enable the
option of building another floor (above the planned two) when the
need arises. The entire building will be centrally air conditioned
with partitions so that one area does not contaminate (in the
biological sense) other areas. An agreement with Rajasthan State
Electricity Board has been put in place whereby Pilani will get
another 33KVA sub station - presumably allowing this and other
electricity consuming projects to go forward.
Vice Chancellor, Dr. LK Maheswari has
a request to the Alumni. He would like the alumni with the right
skills to help the institute in the following areas:
- This will be a "green"
building. Therefore inputs are welcome from
alumni who are in this area - architects, structural engineers,
- Alumni inputs to help design the structure
(providing inputs as to adequacy, reconfiguration, greenness,
- Alumni who are specialists in the focused
science fields to help specify the contents of each these labs.
- Alumni who are experts in the focused science
fields to provide any special needs like piping, drop ceiling,
etc. during the design/build phase.
- Alumni who could help finding senior research
faculty. The faculty would then be given complete control of these
labs for research in their respective areas.
This input is urgently needed /
required, especially from those who are "experts" in these areas
since they bring a perspective that is lacking. Pilani's vision is
to make these laboratories, world class and state-of-the art.
Any questions and comments can be sent to Brij Bhushan, Adjunct Professor at BITS-Pilani at firstname.lastname@example.org. He would
coordinate the initial contacts with Pilani and subsequently let the
alumni start the dialog with appropriate personnel in Pilani.
