Message from Vice Chancellor, BITS-Pilani
Prof. L. K. Maheshwari

Dear BITSian,

I am completing my term as Vice-Chancellor of BITS on the 31st July, 2010 and will continue to be associated with BITS as Advisor to the Chancellor for a few more years.  I have served BITS for about 40 years in various capacities. I came to Pilani as a student at the age of 20 in 1965 and completed M.Sc. (Tech.) and Ph.D. degrees in 1965 and 1971 respectively.  I commenced my career as a Lecturer in EEE Group in 1971 and was appointed as Associate Professor in 1976 and full Professor in 1982.

I always enjoyed teaching various courses at BITS. I have been fortunate enough to have earned the affection and respect of a large number of students who have always appreciated my efforts in teaching, guiding research and also in motivating the young generation of students.  The various e-mails and communications I receive from students from time to time express such feelings.

At BITS I have held various administrative positions starting with the Chief, Instrumentation Centre; Dean, Research & Consultancy; Deputy Director (Academic); Director- Pilani campus; Pro-Vice Chancellor and lastly the Vice Chancellor. I have been very fortunate to have had the cooperation and understanding of the dedicated faculty and staff members of the Institute.  When I leave BITS, I do so with immense professional and personal satisfaction. It is my conviction that BITS has a very bright future under the dynamic leadership of its present Chancellor, Dr. Kumar Mangalam Birla.  BITS has already made significant contributions in the field of higher education in the country and is continuing its journey towards excellence. All this has been possible due to its educational processes, bright students, dedicated faculty and staff members, passionate alumni and interest and support of Birla family. Today BITS ranks as the top private engineering & technology institute in the country.

The vision laid down by its Founder Chairman, the late Shri G.D. Birla continues to guide the educational process at BITS even today. I had the good fortune to have worked with the Former Chancellor, the Late Dr. K.K. Birla, who excellently guided the Institute for about 25 years.  After his demise, Dr. Kumar Mangalam Birla took over as the Chancellor of the Institute in 2008.  Working with him during the last about two years has been a very pleasing experience. My predecessors have contributed in their own ways to the development of the Institute and laid a strong foundation.  During my tenure as Vice Chancellor the Institute has progressed further. Many new programmes have been launched. Infrastructure is being upgraded and faculty and staff benefits have been revamped. The Vision 2020: Mission 2012 project of the institute is paving way for many new initiatives in the years to come.

Today the Institute campuses in Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad and Dubai are operating very successfully.  Our collaborations with various industries for Practice School and the Work Integrated Learning Programmes are continuously growing. These collaborations alongwith international collaborations with many institutions are being further strengthened by establishing research linkages. The Institute has also been involved in many societal development projects such as rainwater harvesting, women and children health studies, entrepreneurship developments, etc. in the nearby areas.

I take this opportunity to convey my sincere gratitude and thanks to you for the support extended to me during my tenure at BITS.

I thank the BITSAA International volunteers for their effort in distributing the text and video of this message to all BITSAA registered members on my behalf.

With my best wishes,
L.K. Maheshwari
