Thursday, July 14, 2011
BITS, Pilani Alumni Association (BITSAA) International is proud to announce its new President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees - Raju Reddy, an alumnus of the 1976-1981 batch.
Raju graduated from BITS, Pilani in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and followed up with an M.S.in Computer Science from Virginia Tech. He worked at Intel for over 10 years in software development, marketing and general management before moving on to create one of the top 75 most Admired companies in Silicon Valley, Top 25 great places to work in India and Top 10 best employers in South China in Sierra Atlantic. Raju also serves on the BITS, Pilani Board of Directors, as a Charter member of TiE Silicon Valley, Board of Trustees for Puente, a Wharton School non-profit program and the India Community Center in the Bay Area (Chair of Sevathon 2010 & 2011).
Raju's passion and vision for alumni and our alma mater has spurred many into action over the years. Raju was a patron for BITSAA's recently concluded inaugural Global Meet in New Delhi. Raju was key in marshaling support for one of BITSAA's most successful Fundraisers - India's first humanoid ACYUT1 (2008). This visionary effort by the class of 1981 marshaled by Raju and his classmate Viggy Mokkarala led to a multitude of students from the BITS, Pilani campuses participating (and winning) in premier international competitions thereafter including India's first gold medal in Robotics - ACYUT2 (2009), ACYUT3 (2010), Shaurya (2010), Teevra (2010), Project IFOR (2011) with alumni support.
First, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to outgoing President & Chairman Prof. S P Kothari (1974-1979), the Board of Directors and Leadership Team for laying the foundation of a global, inclusive grass-roots led all-volunteer alumni organization serving our alma-mater. It is heartening to see the interest and eagerness the younger generation of BITSians have in serving BITS Pilani and its community. We at BITSAA are also extremely delighted to see the rapid progress that BITS Pilani, under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Dr. B. N. Jain is making, as a part of the Strategic Plan 2012-2020 unveiled at the Global Meet in January this year.
As India takes center stage in the global economy, the next generation of a Stanford or MIT is bound to come from India and/or China within the next two decades. Our alma mater, BITS Pilani has great potential to be one of those global brands for higher education coming out of Asia. This is an exciting time for alumni to make a difference to our alma-mater. I am delighted to personally witness the generous commitment of time and money from many of you. I call on you, my fellow alumni, to assist and support me and my team in taking BITS Pilani in its evolution into a leading global university.
Over the past few months as Chairman-Elect, I had the opportunity to meet and interact with many BITSAA Leaders worldwide. Based on those conversations, here is what I have challenged myself and for the organization to achieve. I welcome your feedback on these high level objectives for BITSAA International:
1. Streamline Governance of Alumni Programs (across chapters, batches) in support of BITS Pilani's stated objectives
2. Raise at least $1M before the next BGM to support "Bridges to the future" campaign
3. Create an eco-system of partners in industry, government and academia to enhance research and entrepreneurship at BITS Pilani
I thank you for your support and good wishes. With your active cooperation, I am sure we can take BITS & BITSAA to loftier perches. Please feel free to contact me at email@example.com or my team at firstname.lastname@example.org with your ideas, time or the desire to contribute to our alma-mater in any way."
Outgoing President & Chairman of the Board SP Kothari had this message:

Raju is an inspiring role model for all BITSians - successful beyond belief yet humble to the core, mentor to countless, ever so loyal to BITS, and devoted to the mission of BITSAA. I have been fortunate in having Raju as my confidante and advisor for this past year while he was Chairman-Elect. Under his leadership, I fully expect BITSAA to reach the next level in making a difference at BITS and in the lives of alumni.
