Two years of tuitions, sleepless nights, repeating a hundred definitions a thousand times, writing down derivations and working out problems over and over and over again. It’s probably fair that once you come out on top after competing against the whole country, you shouldn’t be asked to contest against another hundred thousand! But then it’s always a fight to get into one of India’s best universities.
BITS Pilani has always recognized the effort that goes into topping your board exams. It’s an achievement of merit that deserves to be rewarded. 97,000 applicants took the BITSAT this year. Less than 1% was admitted through this one-of-a-kind online admission test. But through its category of "Direct Admission”, 22 of the country’s various board toppers have been admitted to BITS Pilani, purely on merit. In keeping with the diversity of culture that has always culminated at Pilani, the toppers come from Jammu & Kashmir in the north all the way down to Tamil Nadu in the South. Others that made the cut represent Meghalaya, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Assam ,Chattisgarh, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Haryana, Tripura, Punjab, Gujrat, Jharkhand, UP and Andhra Pradesh. Six girls feature in the list.
It is also refreshing to see that disciplines chosen by the toppers are branching out. Of course through Electrical & Electronics and Computer Science still dominate the scene, there are three Mechanical and one Civil discipline that show up among the top 22. BITS has also gone through a re-design of its curriculum making it comparable with the best in the world, with the campus poised for some interesting expansion programs, says Prof. B.N. Jain, Vice Chancellor.

Enjoy your time in Pilani. I graduated from BITS in 1986, and came to the US for graduate school, and currently live in the US. I still have wonderful memories of my time in Pilani; I would say the best time as a student. It's an Oasis, and the campus has grown and devoped over the last two decades since I left Pilani. I still miss Pilani and the campus life. You are all in for the time of your life. Work hard, but don't forget to enjoy your time on campus. Enjoy the beauty of the campus and its very quiet life.
