Assistant Dean Practice School

Dear Alumnus,

Greetings from Practice School Division, BITS Pilani.

As you are aware, the BITS curriculum offers two Practice School exposures to students, PSI and PSII. PSI operates during the summer break for students who have completed 4 semesters of classwork. This year, PSI will operate from May 21 to July 15, 2012 and we need to assure PSI positions for 2100 students across all the campuses. To do this we need to open new stations as we are in need of about 500 additional positions for the current year.

In this regard, we request the assistance of the alumni community in increasing the number of PSI Stations across the country.

Looking forward to a continued and growing association between Practice School Division and the alumni community,

Thank you

Sutapa Roy Ramanan

Practice School - I course:

Overview and scope: Integral part of the curriculum, done by all students at the end of the second year, during the summer. To expose the students to the corporate environment/workplace, to study, understand and appreciate organization structure and function, and the various processes and products.

Student profile: All the students would have undergone the common foundation courses in Mathematics, Science, Analysis, Technical Arts (Computer Programming - 2 courses, Graphics, Report Writing, and Workshop), Measurement laboratory, Engineering Science (Electronics, Thermodynamics, Materials Science), and Principles of Management. In addition they would have undergone a few courses of their own disciplines.

Duration and Calendar: 8 weeks, May 21 - July 13, 2012

Structure: After an initial orientation, the students are assigned suitable project work in the various departments, usually in small groups. It has been our experience, that even in this brief period, our students are able to contribute significantly in the course of the project work. The emphasis is on experiential learning, through participation and contribution to ongoing work.

Nature of Assignments: While students have demonstrated their ability to contribute in diverse ways, some general areas where they may be effectively utilized are ( i ) data collection, classification and analysis, (ii) carrying out experiments, simulations, and trial runs, (iii) elementary design, (iv) post design testing before implementation, (v) literature survey, (vi) documentation including manual/catalogue preparation etc., Many other areas can be identified where the students will be able to contribute effectively.

Statistics: The PS activities of our three campuses in India are coordinated jointly. In summer 2011 (May 23 to July 15, 2011), more than 2000 students from our Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses have participated in the PS- I course, conducted at 210 organizations, and monitored by over 115 faculty members.

Miscellaneous: PS- I is faculty monitored and evaluated. The faculty member will conduct the program, in consultation with the coordinator from the host organization. No stipend is expected in PS- I .

Minimum Students at each Organization: Considering the nature of the course and faculty involvement, we conduct this course with a batch of 20 students in an organization to create learning process for the students and make logistically feasible also.

Therefore, if you wish to host Practice School - I course during May-July 2012, we request to mail us the number of students that you can accommodate in this course and contact details of the executive with whom further communication can be made in this regard.

The Practice School operations of the Pilani , Goa and Hyderabad campuses are coordinated jointly at Pilani. Brief program details attached herewith for your reference.
