Chimpooji needs Help

Dear BITSian,

Remember the first time when you entered the hallowed grounds of Pilani campus and in a Cnot menu you came across a drink named MNB which seemed to be just a funny misprint that happens so often in Indian restaurants? But little did you have an idea of how that term slowly would become ingrained in your countless Pilani memories, a silent spectator of your innumerable rants, a proud partner of many achievement treats, a joyous participant of many birthday celebrations. Remember, the smiling face that was there behind the counter at all those MNB times. That man is our dear Chimpoo ji and today that face is no longer smiling, as he tries to persevere in the face of severe liver damage.

His family faces an uphill battle as they try to manage their finances while reeling under the stress caused by the ill health of a family member. Multiple hospital stays at Jaipur, Mumbai and Gurgaon have taken their toll on the family finances and life. The doctors have concluded after multiple treatment attempts that a liver transplant is the only hope. The treatment process is long and expensive. Liver transplant package itself costs 30 lakhs and post-transplant treatment is expensive too.

We have started a fundraising campaign for Chimpoo. We know time is short and the amount large but still smaller than the BITSian spirit. We will require active fundraising and generous contributions from all of you. Let's pour in some love for Chimpoo. Let’s all contribute to bring back the smile on Chimpoo ji’s face.

To support the cause, please contribute your bit at http://www.bitsaa.org/donations/fund.asp?id=14018

The mentioned link gives you the option of donating in INR as well as USD.

Lets all contribute any suitable amount - big or small and show our support to help Chimpooji in true BITSian spirit.

For any questions, do email fundraising-team@bitsaa.org .

Thanks!

Strength Through Unity - Bringing BITSians Closer

Dear BITSian

“No one is stronger than all of us” reads a famous quote online. And over the years BITSiansaround the world have proved that it holds true. We have come together to fund education initiatives at BITS, set up world class infrastructure for the newer generation to use, helped out fellow BITSians in need and sometimes, just gathered together on BITSians Day to relive our old memories together. It is this love for BITS as well as our desire to help out fellow BITSians that sets us apart from many other institutions. We, at BITSAA, always strive to strengthen the spirit of giving back to BITS Pilani, towards better infrastructure, student exposure and education quality among other things. BITSAA is looking for contributions to fund many initiatives that help BITSians as well as BITS Pilani, in the short term as well as long term. For many of us, busy working professionals, this might be the easiestway to give back.

Flashback: BITSians' Day 2015

Dear BITSian,

A couple of BITSians met up in Nairobi, Kenya on the 7th of August to revel in the common bond they shared. From Sydney to Seattle, BITSians at 175 locations across the globe flocked together and relived the good old BITSian days. BITSians in more than 100 offices worldwide came and showed off the BITSian spirit in their offices, wearing their BITSian pride on their sleeve.  In Chennai, BITSians shone on the printed media front. The social media saw a deluge of BITSian memories.

This was BITSians’ Day 2015.

With an unprecedented answer to the call, we can easily say that BITSians’ Day 2015 was a resounding success [and we mean that modestly, to say the least]; and we have no one else to thank but ourselves – the BITSian junta! Colleagues, friends and family everywhere were astounded by this sudden outpouring of “BITsian-ity” – one social media post even ridiculed it thus “Agle janam ya toh 10 se zyada BITSian friends na dijo, ya BITSian hi kijo (In my next birth, either give me less than 10 BITSian friends or make me a BITSian)”.

We’re sure we’ve set a precedent for any other alumni groups out there. Each one of us should be proud of such an accomplishment.

We sincerely hope that the BITSians you met, the connections you forged or re-discovered, and the memories you unearthed, will go a long way and you will like to get more active in local BITSAA chapters, organize more meet ups/enthu sessions etc., and yes, be looking forward to BITSians’ Day next year!

Announcing the new Executive Team of BITSAA International

Dear BITSian

BITSAA has been an integral part of my life for the past five and a half years. What began as a chance meeting between two friends over a drink, opened up a gateway to something I can best describe as a roller-coaster ride. I joined as a volunteer in the technology team and got driven to operations and later the 'hot'-seat. "The buck stops at you" - as one wise man once told me; does bring its share of joys and occasional frustrations.

I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have worked very closely with many BITSian stalwarts, picking a few tricks of the trade along the way. I don't think there is any substitute to this kind of learning - something I would be eternally thankful for. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the leadership at BITS, Pilani & BITSAA Board of Directors for putting their faith in me and my team to get things done. I hope I was able to do some justice to the role.

With BGM 3.0 around the corner, it is the right time for the current Executive team to pass the baton on to a more capable and energetic team; folks who are not bogged down by the baggage of legacy;folks who can do more justice to our mission and vision, with a much needed fresh perspective.
Without further ado, I'd like to introduce the BITSAA Executive Team - 2015-17 (effective Aug 16, 2015)

Announcing the release of Annual Report 2014

Dear BITSians,

BITSAA is happy to release its annual report for the year 2014.

BITSAA’s growing numbers, influence, and its committed army of  volunteers have helped us remain involved in a wide range of  activities aimed at enhancing the quality of BITS education, its  faculty, its infrastructure, its student body, the affordability of BITS  education to the economically disadvantaged, and ultimately the  BITS, Pilani brand. The coffee-table book styled Annual Report for  2014 (available for online reading & download) highlights some of these activities from the past year.

The year 2014 has been quite momentous under the able leadership of our Chairman - Mr Raju Reddy('76-'81). Allow me to give you a quick snapshot.

  1. BITSAA International kick started the Bridges to the Future fundraising campaign in Dec 2011 and BITSAA set out to raise the $1 Million before BITSAA Global Meet 2014. I am extremely happy to inform you that BITSAA has exceeded the expectations and has crossed $1 Million– thanks to generous donors like you. The funds raised has been supporting various initiatives for BITS Pilani and its alumni. The leadership team at BITSAA has always pursued programs that we believe will not only benefit BITS Pilani but serve as a model for other colleges across India thereby benefiting the broader society. One such initiative is the BITSConnect 2.0. Spearheaded by alumni, this project has put BITS Pilani on the map of the finest universities in the world for leveraging technology in education. It comes as no surprise that BITSConnect 2.0 recently won the EDGE award from Informationweek.

  2. BITS Pilani forged a partnership with edX, a MOOC platform comprising a worldwide consortium of universities, including the prestigious MIT and Harvard University. BITS Pilani is a contributing member, and will use edX to enhance its learning experience of its on-campus courses and will also MOOC courses to students outside of BITS.  This new initiative will support the objectives of BITS in expanding its technology footprint in education using tools, technology and platform from edX.

  3. BITS Pilani has been awarded the inaugural FICCI Higher Education Award 2014 for “ICT Integration” 2014. The award was presented by Mr. Greg Clark, UK's Minister of State for Universities, in the presence of Shrimati Smriti Irani, Minister HRD, and Ms. Niikki Randhawa Haley, Governor of South Carolina (USA), Mr. Mohandas Pai Chair, FICCI HE Committee. Among other things, BITS was recognized for use of ICT in online BITSAT exam since 2005, ERP integration for academic and administrative functions since 2013, TelePresence based classrooms and conference facilities since 2013, and for recent efforts to introduce e-Attendance and edX based MOOCs/SPOCs courses. This is not to mention the massive ICT infrastructure, portals and the various application services/software developed in-house and run for several years.

Many thanks to the various BITSAA teams involved in getting this report to shape. Go ahead and enjoy reading the BITSAA Annual Report 2014.

BITSAA International profusely thanks Ceera Investments for being the title sponsor of the Annual Report.

Change in Alumni Leadership

2014 also saw the change in alumni leadership with Mr. Jayan Ramakutty(75’-’80) taking over from Mr. Raju Reddy (‘76-’81) as the new Chairman of BITSAA International Board of Trustees.  Speaking on the occasion, Raju had remarked:

"It is my privilege to introduce Jayan Ramankutty as the incoming chairman of BITSAA International. Jayan is widely recognized for his entrepreneurial record and leadership in the community. I had the good fortune of knowing Jayan for well over a decade now and he has always been generous with his time and ideas for anything relating to BITS and the welfare of its alumni. He is a thoughtful leader with a track record of getting things done. I am sure BITSAA will continue to shine and grow into a model alumni organization under his leadership. Please join me in welcoming Jayan to his new role as the Chairman of BITSAA."

                    Raju Reddy                                                        Jayan Ramankutty

Let me close with a few announcements.

In our continued efforts to give an alumni the best virtual experience, BITSAA International has launched a brand new, state of the art website. The website, still in its beta phase, can be accessed at http://beta.bitsaa.org/. You'll be able to search the entire BITSian directory and find fellow alumni, search and connect with local chapters and engage with other BITSians in your area, stay updated about all the events happening and also receive the latest news about the community. Above all, we're trying to make this a very secure place where BITSians interact and help each other. It can also automatically pick your updated professional information once you provide a link to your Facebook/LinkedIn profile (we are sure you have one!). I request you all to use the new website, and please do send us your valuable feedback to us at website-team@bitsaa.org.

The third edition of the BITSAA Global Meet (BGM) will be held from the 5th to the 7th of January, 2017 in Dubai. Stay tuned for more updates!

With Best Wishes

BITSians' Day Message from the Acting VC

Dear friends,

I am happy to share with you that I have taken over as the Acting Vice Chancellor of BITS Pilani from Prof. B. N. Jain who has significantly contributed in the last five years, giving substantial thrust and focus on research.

As you are aware, BITS is on the path of excellence in Industry Engagement, Teaching, Research, and Innovation.

As an alumnus of BITS, I am fully aware of the role played by BITS alumni in this great journey of BITS.  A few areas where BITS alumni’s contribution have been substantial, are BITSConnect 1.0, BITSConnect 2.0, Practice School, Placements, Entrepreneurship, Sport facilities, student mentoring, etc. We are embarking upon major expansion drive/ projects across all three campuses in the coming five years.

All ingredient elements are in place - like dedication of faculty & staff, commitment of alumni, inquisitiveness of students, support from leadership and encouragement of management - to ensure the successful journey forward and to put the Institute in the next orbit.

As a fellow alumnus, I take this opportunity to request you to rededicate ourselves to carry forward this journey of excellence, on the BITSIANs' Day being celebrated all over the world on 7th August.

I would like to seek your guidance, cooperation and support in all spheres of activities.

Organize BITSians' Day In Your Office

Dear BITSian,

Hope you are doing good.

We spend 70% of our awake time at work. It is important to treat your workplace as a second, bigger family. So, as a part of BITSians’ Day we urge BITSians working in the same company to meet and connect with each other and flaunt their BITSianness.

Every year volunteers enthusiastically come forward and organize events at their workplace, and we want your support this time as well! Your typical task will include bringing together BITSians in your office, deciding the venue and time for the get-together, planning out activities (such as a lunch, informal networking sessions, cake cutting or anything else that you deem fit), and communicate these to the BITSians in your office. Also, don’t forget to ask all BITSians to wear a BITSian T-Shirt to work on that day!

Please fill this form if you would like to help us organize this at your work:

Announcing BITSians' Day 2015

Dear BITSian,

After two successful renditions, BITSAA is back with the third edition of BITSians’ day to be held on the 7th of August 2015. BITSians’ day is a unique initiative, where BITSians across the globe meet one another and relive the good old BITSian days. It helps to forge connections across batches and chapters, thus helping in bringing the world BITSian Community closer. It brings together BITSians located close but unaware of this commonness they share as well as BITSians located miles away from each other but who once shared the same locality of BITS campuses- all in one day.

Register here to participate in the event:

On the first of August last year, over 2500 BITSians in over 100 companies all over the world wore BITS t-shirts to work and organized get-togethers in their workplace. Marathons, lunch-meets, coffee-meets were lined up for the day with people coming together and celebrating being a BITSian, wading through memories of the glorious prime days of their lives, recollecting incidents and events from their days at BITS Pilani.

BITSians in NVIDIA, Bangalore

How BITSians swarmed the social media on this day is a different tale altogether! BITSians posted status messages with their BITS Identification numbers, shared nostalgic photos of their BITSian journeys, shared their #BITSMemories. The sudden outpour of the BITSian spirit baffled the Facebook junta and in every probability made them envious too. Activities and events marked celebrations across chapters, attended by over 4000 BITSians.

Be prepared to experience all that excitement yet again! Various events are being planned for August 7 across the globe.

It is with deep regret we bring sad news to you that Ravi Kishore Komatireddy, who had been suffering from a rare case of Head & Neck Cancer passed away on the morning of 11th February. Tumor hit one of the arteries in the neck. We at BITSAA pay our deepest condolences. May his friends and family find the courage to bear with the great loss. Tragically, only earlieryesterdaywe had launched a fundraiser to help Ravi. Little did we know that he had only a few days to live. Several BITSians donated to the fund as soon as it was launched. We thank them for their good heart. BITSAA fund to help Ravi has been suspended. We will reach out to those of you who have already donated to this fund shortly.

An Appeal for Help!

Dear fellow BITSians,

You may be aware that our fellow BITSian, Ravi Kishore Komatireddy, was diagnosed with Head & Neck Cancer in April 2014. This is a rare type of cancer which is even more rare for the 30-34 years age group @ 0.025%.

Since April 2014, Ravi has been going through multiple treatment modalities (surgery, radiation, chemo) in Hyderabad and London. Unfortunately, the sessions have taken their toll, both on his health and on his family’s finances.

There is hope for Ravi's recovery: The FDA recently approved a drug called Pembrolizumab, which has had success in very late stage melanoma cancer. We hope that this drug will be able to help Ravi too. Clinical trials for use ofPembrolizumabfor Head & Neck cancer will start in late February, but he doesn’t have that much time. Ravi needs access to the drug now.

Each dose ofPembrolizumabcosts £4000, and Ravi will need one dose every three weeks. Needless to say, this will be a huge financial burden on Ravi’s family. Ravi’s friends have formed ‘Team Ravi’ to help them through it.

Ravi is a fighter – he is bravely enduring through the chemo and the stress, all with a smile. We hope that with our support we make this smile last forever!

An ulcer that appeared in his mouth has changed Ravi’s life forever. At 31, Ravi has an admission offer for the MBA at Kellogg Business School that he has deferred. We are hoping that Ravi can get well soon and live his dreams of getting an MBA degree and maybe DJing with Tiesto someday.

BITSAA has setup a fund to raise 15K USD which will help Team Ravi meet their initial target of 100K USD.

https://bitsaa.site-ym.com/donations/fund.asp?id=12566

Please donate to help Ravi. Also, please share this communication with your colleagues, family and friends who you think might be able to help.

You can also help Ravi non-monetarily. Ravi's treatment requires drugs that are expensive. If you or someone you know, knows people in the pharma industry or any other connection that can help, please drop a line to helpravi-team@bitsaa.org.

For any questions or help with donations, please contact fr@bitsaa.org.

Announcing the new Chairman of BITSAA International

Dear BITSian

BITSAA International is proud to announce Jayan Ramankutty as the new Chairman of the BITSAA board of Trustees. Jayan takes over the reins from Raju Reddy, who completed his term in 2014.

Jayan Ramankutty graduated from BITS Pilani in 1980 with a BE (Hons.) in Electronics. Subsequently,  he worked in India till 1983, Singapore for a little over 3 years before moving to the Silicon Valley in January 1987. Jayan has over 20 years of extensive experience in designing and developing large, multi-processor computer systems, complex ASICs and SoCs in the field of networking, telecommunication and multimedia markets. During the last two decades, Jayan has founded five companies. Most recently, he founded YuMe networks a company focused on “real-time online video Ad insertion” and KRK Labs. Prior to this, Jayan co-founded Lara Networks in 1997, a world leader in Network Search Engine, which was acquired by Cypress Semiconductor in 2001 for approximately $300MM. In 1991, Jayan co-founded Nimbus Technology a leading designer and manufacturer of Sparc Chipset. Nimbus was acquired by Alliance Semiconductor prior to going IPO. He is the founding President of BITSAA-SVC and mentors graduating students at Duke University on Entrepreneurship.

Excited about his new role, Jayan aptly says:

"I’m really honored and deeply humbled to be serving as the Chairman of BITSAA International. For that I want to thank the outgoing Chairman, Raju Reddy, Prof. SP Kothari, the BITSAA Board and the countless dedicated volunteers who have placed their trust in me. Your passion and vision has created an organization that could easily be the envy of any alumni association around the world.

During the past year, I had the opportunity to visit several chapters. I was impressed by the level of enthusiasm among the Alums  to commit their time and money with a passion to make their Alma mater better than ever. The message was clear for us: to perpetuate the work that was already set into motion by the earlier teams– to make BITS a world class institution!

Building on the foundation that was already established by the earlier teams, I aim to work diligently to seek out and build strong partnerships between BITS and other universities around the world. As Corporations continue to focus on their bottom lines, I believe fundamental research and development of Intellectual property would once again be in the hands of the Universities. Generating Intellectual Property in that fashion would enable rich entrepreneurial eco systems to be developed locally, not only raising the brand value of the University but also the quality of life for the society at large. Here in lies one of the greatest opportunities for BITS to become the centerpiece for not only research but also a place where world class entrepreneurs are created!

When Alumni, the University, the Management and the Faculty work together many a wonders could be created. I’ve personally witnessed this and this symbiotic relationship is stronger than ever! That has brought us together to work on several big ideas - BITSConnect 1.0, BITSConnect 2.0 and Bridges to the Future. Let us continue to work together on new ideas to take our Alma mater to new heights.

Do feel free to call on me with ideas or just for a good time! On behalf of my team, I’d like to thank you for your support."

Raju served as the second Chairman of BITSAA International and many high-impact initiatives under successfully undertaken under his leadership. BITS Spark, BITS Connect 2.0, Bridges to the Future, the BGM, BITSians' day and the NASDAQ ceremony are some of them. Reflecting on the transition, Raju says

 Messages from the Campuses

Needless to say, the leadership at BITS, Pilani is equally ecstatic on having found an able successor to Raju. Here is what the directors had to say:

"Raju Reddy's term as Chairman BITSAA International has been a spectacular one with a number of initiatives taken up by BITSAA Int . Notable among them, according to me, are the two global meets, his pioneering role in BITS SPARK and most importantly for BITS, BITS CONNECT 2.0. Whenever I switch on EX 90 on my table, everyday, I remember Raju and through him, BITSians all over the globe for their thoughtful contribution to their Alma Mater.

I am confident that the initiatives patronised by Raju would be pursued further with much more enthusiasm by his worthy successor, Jayan,  whom I am fortunate to be familiar with" - Prof.  K E Raman, Director of the Goa Campus and Chairman of the Office of Alumni Affairs

"Mr Raju Reddy is a true example of a BITSian and a true leader of BITSAA Intl by his thoughts and actions. As he passes on the baton to Mr Jayan Ramankutty, I wish to place on record our deep appreciation of Raju's contribution in bringing BITS and its alumni nearer.

Eight years back when I was on a visit to US, I had the privilege of meeting a number of BITS alumni across US. This was enabled by the BITSAA International with some of its enthusiastic members. One evening, we had a party at the residence of Dr Kothari. As we enjoyed the beauty of San Fransico from the 24th floor of the building, enjoying the great hospitality of Dr Kothari, we discussed BITS and I recall some of the passionate (at times critical) comments Jayan Ramankutty made on how BITS is responding to its alumni. He was voicing the feelings of many and it made a strong impression on me. I am truly happy to see that he is now taking charge from Raju and will be leading BITSAA international. I wish him great success and look forward to interacting with him" - Prof. G Raghurama, Director, Pilani Campus

"BITSAA International has been doing an incredible job for more than ten years.  I have been fortunate to be closely associated with its past Chairmen, Mr. Prem Jain, Prof. SP Kothari and Mr. Raju Reddy who have done exemplarily in providing a strong foundation and effective guidance by creating a robust framework for sustainable growth of the organization. Incidentally, they have also been conferred upon the Distinguished Alumni Award for their outstanding contribution to BITS.

An outstanding achievement of these three distinguished people is the conception of BITSAA Global Meet. The first BITSAA Global Meet was held in 2011 at Gurgaon, and the second in 2014 at Hyderabad, which are testimony to their great efforts in driving this important organ of BITS Pilani which will be playing a pivotal role in the growth of BITS Pilani.

I have been equally fortunate for having a long association with Mr. Jayan Ramankutty, the incumbent to take charge as Chairman, BITSAA.  Jayan has been contributing during the last one decade in various ways as one of the founding members of BITSAA International.  His administrative acumen, organizational ability, visionary outlook and net-working skills will take the organization to greater heights. I wish him All Success in his endeavor" - Prof. V S Rao, Director, Hyderabad Campus

Please join all of us at BITSAA and BITS, Pilani in welcoming Jayan to his new role. We are confident that with the support of the entire BITSAA ecosystem, Jayan and team would take BITS and BITSAA to greater heights.

“BITSAA International is dedicated in keeping the brand of BITS flying high! Towards that, it works incessantly in keeping BITSians connected to each other and BITS, our Alma Mater. Our Alma Mater gave us more than an education! She gave us the opportunity to embrace life with a passion and experience some of the best days of our lives. It is only natural that each of us who have gained so much in life would be motivated to give some back to our Alma Mater so that she continues to offer the same for generations to come!” - Jayan Ramankutty, Managing Partner at KRK Ventures, LLC and Incoming BITSAA Chairman.

Will you step up and give back to your Alma Mater?

We gain so much more than just an education from BITS, so it is imperative that we try to give as much back. The term alma-mater is reason enough, but if you need further motivation to give back, here is a selective list of initiatives which are impacting the lives of BITSians globally.

Do not forget to add #GiveBITSAA to your post and tag your BITSian friends to keep the chain going.  The friends that you tag can then donate and/or post a picture of themselves with BITS/BITSAA memorabilia (like wearing a BITS t-shirt, with a BITS mug, etc.)

Run. For BITS.

The gentle caress of the cold morning air tries to cool down the steam rising from your body. The dark of pre-dawn is slowly dispelled by a sleepy sun, painting the sky in its ruddy colors. The music pounding in your ears drowns out the screams of your straining muscles as you try to reach the next mile marker, or the next aid station… the mind chanting “one more mile before I stop”.

As you wonder what made you get out of your cozy blanket and decide to punish your body in such a way, and you start to slow down, you feel a gentle pat on the back, and see a broadly smiling soul who gives you a thumbs up as he/she breezes past, or perhaps says “Doing great, buddy!” “C’mon!” ”Almost there man, don’t stop NOW!” Then another, and another. And you soon find yourself in their ranks, running for the ecstasy of it.

Welcome to a new addiction, welcome.. to the Runners’ High. The high that makes sighting the finish line a bitter-sweet experience - on one hand you are content and spent, but on the other hand you want to go on and on, and then some.

As you regain your pace and run, you see someone a few minutes down the line, struggling as you were, and you know it’s your turn. Your smile, your two seconds of attention energizes him/her, and pushes them to conquer themselves.

Because this is what running is all about. Not just about yourself, but about the community as a whole. It's about conquering your body and your mind, inspiring others, and using it as an excuse - to make friends, to have fun, and to contribute to the greater good.

As with everything, the greatest joy is in giving, in feeling that you are part of a bigger whole. The whole experience gains greater meaning when you know you are running for a cause, rather than just a Personal Best to post on social media. Runners around the world use their endurance feats to do just that, by raising funds or awareness for a cause that's dear to them.

We are therefore dedicating this year’s run to Prof. I J Nagrath.

This year, the BITSian community has been deeply saddened by the demise of Prof. I J Nagrath. Prof. Nagrath was a great mentor and role model for several generations of BITSians and BITSAA would like to pay a tribute to him on behalf of the entire BITS community. In order to remember him and honor his legacy, BITSAA has decided to institute an award, "Prof. I J Nagrath Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award". The award will be a way to recognize BITS faculty for their contributions to BITS, especially in mentoring and guiding the students. BITSAA will award one faculty per campus every year.

If you would like to contribute towards this award, do click on the link below, which details the procedure to donate:
