Prof. Suresh Ramaswamy Commemorative – A Tribute to SuRa

Prof Suresh Ramaswamy

Prof. Suresh Ramaswamy (SuRa) needs no introduction to BITSians – especially from BITS Pilani Goa. He has been a mentor, teacher and an inspirational figure to several BITSians. He was also a BITSian from the 1980 batch.

As Head of the Physics Department, he set up one of the best departments in the Goa campus. The encouragement and motivation he provided to faculty and students alike generated a very inclusive and positive atmosphere, where people were given the opportunity to learn, develop and excel in the subject in their own way.

As a teacher, Prof. Ramaswamy was always on the look-out for innovative ways to make the subject more interesting. From practical demonstrations related to fundamental ideas in Newtonian physics, to his lucid, insightful lectures on the most advanced topics in quantum theory, Professor Ramaswamy’s style of teaching is remembered fondly by many of his students. He could simplify complicated ideas, and would always make time to help an interested student.

As an administrator he was one of the best on campus. During his time as Chief Warden and Dean Administration, he was always known to be extremely fair, liberal and understanding and often facilitated the process of finding solutions to challenging problems.

As a motivator and someone who could encourage the positive aspirations of everyone around him, he was unmatched in his ability to understand and offer valuable advice when it was required the most. The trust and belief he had in students was truly inspirational. Professor Ramaswamy was always the person on campus you wanted to go to with an important query, or a tough problem - you were guaranteed understanding and advice at the very least; often you got much more. His suggestions were always in an understated, matter of fact way that endeared him to everyone. His humility and genuine affection towards the people was felt all around.

Prof. Ramaswamy's loss will be deeply felt by generations of BITS alumni he mentored. But his absence will perhaps be felt most by the present and incoming batches of students.

He was very instrumental in making the BITS Goa family what it is today and went that extra mile to make us feel at home in the brand new campus.
